Mission

 

The primary mission of the Department is the cultivation and promotion of knowledge about the provision of nursing services, as well as the provision of students with the necessary skills to ensure that they are well trained for a scientific and professional career.

In addition, the Department's mission is to organize postgraduate studies leading to the training of scientists with specialized knowledge in specific subjects of the Department.

The Department of Nursing has no directions

Studies

The number of students admitted to the Department of Nursing per year is set per year by a relevant Ministerial Decision. The minimum compulsory period of study at the Department of Nursing for the award of the degree is set at eight (8) semesters. The curriculum of the Department includes: 38 compulsory courses and & nine (9) optional compulsory courses. Students, in order to obtain the degree, must attend during eight (8) semesters:

  • Thirty-eight (38) compulsory courses for a total of 189 credit hours (189 ECTS); and

  • Seven (7) of nine (9) elective/optional required courses offered for a total of fifty-one (51) credit hours (51ECTS).

The required number of credits (ECTS) or ECTS for the degree is 240 ECTS, which are equally distributed over the 8 semesters, i.e. 30 per semester.  One (1) credit (ECTS) corresponds to approximately 25-30 hours of work (teaching programme and personal effort).

Goals

The curriculum of the Department of Nursing is oriented towards providing the required knowledge in the specializations of Nursing Science as well as the cultivation of skills and attitudes. In accordance with WHO and EU guidelines, the curriculum covers the following areas: 

  • Culture, morals or values

  • Health promotion, prevention, guidance and teaching

  • Decision-making

  • Communication and teamwork

  • Research, development and leadership

  • Nursing care 

Results

 

Upon completion of their studies, graduates of the Department of Nursing: 

  • They have a comprehensive body of knowledge, which includes elements from the scientific areas of Nursing Science related to the promotion and assurance of quality of life in health and disease, i.e. holistic and person-centred health care (prevention, care, rehabilitation) of the healthy or sick individual, the family, the group and the community.

  • They are able to deepen and broaden their knowledge of the nursing process based on both nursing diagnosis classification systems and theories of nursing science and evidence-based nursing practice.

  • They have advanced knowledge in the field of Nursing Science that enables them to work effectively with other health professionals to protect and advocate for healthy and sick individuals.

  • They have the skills to solve problems in their specialised field of study.

  • They are able to manage work/research projects, taking responsibility for decisions and problems that arise. 

  • They are able to take on administrative tasks in their area of expertise and deal with situations either individually or in cooperation with colleagues.

  • Have the ability to teach, supervise and evaluate junior colleagues in the context of professional practice.
